We’ve joined the affiliate program for some of these products and are using our referral links below to give you the best discount we can offer for these services.

Our first recommendation is Nextiva, they offer powerful tools that allow you to keep your local number if you want to use it or swap to a virtual phone number for a different geographic location. They even have call forwarding and a virtual receptionist for phone calls.

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/nextiva/

RingCentral is another powerful virtual phone number app provider for small businesses. They have phone numbers for all of the United States and Canada, toll-free 800 numbers, voicemail and more.

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/ringcentral/

Grasshopper is a startup-friendly service offering similar tools to the above as well as call forwarding, voice mail, business VoIP and more.

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/grasshopper/

Phone.com with its great domain name is a great option for a virtual business phone system. They offer cheaper call rates than some for European countries and Canada by counting those as local calls.

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/phone-com/

Google Voice is a free phone app with limited features. It is a good service for those starting out but as you grow we would recommend a service like Nextiva.

https://voice.google.com/

eVoice is a popular service offering international coverage, particularly in the United Kingdom. They include business phone systems, virtual numbers, toll-free numbers, and local numbers for different regions.

https://www.ereceptionist.co.uk/geo/evoice

FreshCaller is for growing businesses offering reasonably priced plans to fit all budgets including a pay per minute plan with agents. It includes all the usual features like call management tools, business hours and apps.

How to View the Mobile Version of WordPress Sites from Desktop

Are you wanting to preview the mobile version of your WordPress site on your desktop? Previewing the mobile layout helps you understand how your website looks on mobile devices for your users while you have the editing capabilities of your desktop computer. In this video, we’ll show you two simple ways to easily preview your site’s mobile layout in WordPress.

For the first method, you would want to be logged in to your WordPress site, and go under Appearance, Customize to view your site. This should bring up the customizer and in the bottom left-hand side there are three icons for you to select from, by default it should be set to the desktop and if you click the other icons it will rotate between the other mobile views.

If your theme does not offer this or you don’t want to view this in the customizer, you can use a browser such as Google Chrome to inspect the page. You would visit your site, right-click, and go down to the inspect link to open the inspector. Next, you would click the icon in the top left of the window that was opened to see the page in a mobile view. As we are using Google Chrome, it has the option to emulate specific windows for popular mobile devices.

How to Uninstall and Delete a WordPress Theme

Do you have an old WordPress theme installed on your site that you’re ready to remove but unsure how to do so safely? WordPress itself comes with pre-installed themes and some hosting providers add more themes to your site so you have multiple options on what you can choose from. This can use up space on your hosting and if you tested some older themes, it has a small chance to leave your site vulnerable. In this video, we will show you how to properly Uninstall and Delete a WordPress theme.

2:55 Method 2: delete unwanted theme via FTP

There are a few different methods for deleting a theme, to start we would recommend creating a backup of any themes you are wanting to keep. For doing this we would recommend connecting to your hosting provider using FTP or your file manager if you have a host that offers this. Go under wp-content, themes, and you should see folders named after your installed themes that you can compress into a zip folder to allow you to download it.

For deleting your theme, under Appearance, Themes, if you select a theme that is not active there should be a link in the bottom right-hand side where you can click delete. Another method, if you are still connected via FTP or a file manager you can go into your wp-content then themes folder and delete the folder for the theme you want to delete.

You can always add back any theme you had deleted either by uploading the zip file for the theme or use the Add New button under Appearance, Themes to search for and readd a theme to your site.

How to Clear Your Cache in WordPress

Have you been told to clear your cache and you’re unsure what steps are involved in doing this? Your web browser, hosting, and caching plugins can each add a layer of caching to your site which can make it difficult to know which to clear. In this video, we’ll show you how to properly clear your cache in WordPress.

To start, we will clear the browser cache and for Chrome, you would do so in the menu under the More tools, “Clear browsing data…” section. We want to ensure we remove the cookies and the cached image files to remove all files that would be associated with sites online. For other major browsers you would want to take a look at our written guide here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-clear-your-browser-cache-in-all-major-browsers-fast-way/

After your browser cache is cleared you would want to go through the plugin cache and depending on the plugin there are a few different locations to clear this. Below are a few methods for different plugins.

WP Rocket: Go under Settings, WP Rocket and click the clear cache button in the Quick Actions section.

WP Super Cache: Go under Settings, WP Super Cache, scroll down and click the Delete Cache button, and you will use the Delete Expired button.

W3 Total Cache: Go under Performance, Dashboard, and click the button labeled “empty call caches”.

For your hosting provider’s cache, it would depend on your hosting provider as each has its own locations for clearing it, for some of the popular ones we’ve listed the methods below.

WPEngine should have a section in your wp-admin area that you can visit and click the button labeled “Purge All Caches”.

Bluehost has a plugin that is added to your admin area which should give the option in the top bar in your admin area under Caching to click Purge All.

SiteGround also has a plugin called SG Cache which has an area in the top bar for you to click Purge SG Cache or you can go to the SG Optimizer area in the left-hand menu and click Purge cache in there.

If you’re using Sucuri, they have a firewall with caching that you can clear under Sucuri Security, Firewall(WAF), then go under their Clear Cache tab for clearing the cache from the firewall.

How to Turn Off Comments Notifications in WordPress

Are you wanting to turn off comments on your WordPress site? WordPress will notify administrators of new comments on their site by default. If you’re just starting out this is good to bring these to your attention but will become annoying as your site grows. In this video, we will show you how to easily disable WordPress comment notification emails.

This video brought to you by SeedProd, the best WordPress giveaway plugin available, take a look at their site here:

For disabling these, you would want to start by going under Settings, Discussion in your admin area. Scroll down and in the ‘E-mail me whenever’ section where you will find two checkboxes. Uncheck these boxes and that will prevent WordPress from sending you emails when a user adds a comment to your site.

Once you install the plugin on your site you should find a new section under Settings called WP Rocket to start modifying the plugin’s settings. To start we would recommend going under the caching settings and enabling caching as well as separate cache files for mobile devices. There’s also the option to specify the lifespan of cache files, for most sites 10 hours is fine but if your site is very active in updates you would want to reduce the time required.

For optimizing your images to load quickly on the web, you would want to take a look at our guide here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/speed-wordpress-save-images-optimized-web/

Under File Optimizations, the default options are what we normally recommend but as you get further into optimizing your site it can help with speed improvements. For the media section, you can enable LazyLoad so your images only load once a user goes to a section of your site where they are visible and soon WordPress will be able to do that by default. Disabling Emojis means that it will have your users using their browser emojis rather than pulling them from your WordPress site.

Preloading gives you the ability to give a bit of a speed boost to specific pages based on your sitemap. The plugin should give you the ability to specify the URL of your sitemap or it will try to find plugin generated files. Next, for the database WordPress handles most of this cleanup automatically but the plugin does give you more power over the ability to do this.

For CDNs, they help deliver your content from a geographically closer area to your users to reduce load time. If you would like to take a look at the CDN we use on WPBeginner, we would recommend taking a look using our referral link here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/maxcdn/

The heartbeat tab we would recommend avoiding for most users as there are settings for beginners that can break your site but the default should not cause any issues. There are also addons for improving Google Analytics, Facebook pixel, and interactions with your hosting provider if they are using Varnish for caching.

How to Create a Photo Contest in WordPress Step by Step

Are you looking to run a photo contest on your WordPress site? Photo contests require users to submit a photo for a chance to join the contest or giveaway and active participation makes them very engaging for your users. In this video, we’ll show you, step by step, how to easily create a photo contest in WordPress.

This video brought to you by RafflePress, the best WordPress giveaway plugin available, take a look at their site here:

https://rafflepress.com/
=================================

For our discount use the code: WPBVIP

For this specfic tutorial we will be using the Pro plan of RafflePress which can be purchased above. Once you install, activate, and add your licence key to the plugin we can start setting up the giveaway for your site.

Start with going under RafflePress, Add New and name the giveaway whatever you would like it to be. RafflePress has a list of pre-built templates templates to start you off with the required fields and for this tutorial we are using the Classic Template.

If you click on the Insert Your Prize Image you will be able to set the prize, name it, add a description and include an image. You can modify that depending on your specific preferences. We also recommend setting the date range the giveaway will be active, for most giveaways one week is a good range for your users to interact with your giveaway.

As we are using the pro version, we will be addint the Submit an Image option and setting it as manditory, you can even change the value of how many submissions it is worth or even allow daily entries. The plugin even includes entry options such as visiting your Facebook or other social channels.

With your entry types added you can go to the Design secton to customize the layout of the giveaway information including the background color, fonts, and button colors. Should you be comfortable with CSS the plugin also has the option to add CSS in the design section.

With all of that set up, in the general settings you can set up what you need from the admin side. This includes setting the giveaway name, using the rules generator to set up the rules for you, setting the permalink you want to have for the giveaway and more.

To prevent spam we normally recommend enabling email verification. Now when you publish the giveaway you have the option to add it with a WordPress block, shortcode, or have RafflePress create a page for you using the permalink you gave in the settings area. Finally when you’ve received your entries and the giveaway has ended you can have the plugin select however many winners you want for the giveaway and the plugin will do the selection for you.

How to Add an Interactive Map in WordPress

So you want to include an interactive map on your WordPress site? These interactive maps allow your users to discover routes, places, and itineraries by clicking on markers on the map or by moving their mouse around. In this guide, we’ll show you how to easily add an interactive map in WordPress.

This video brought to you by RafflePress, the best WordPress giveaway plugin available, take a look at their site here:

For our discount use the code: WPBVIP

For the first method, we will be using Google My Maps which can be found here:

https://www.google.com/mymaps/

Click on the “Create a new map” button and it will bring up a map. You should be able to select the untitled layer to rename it to whatever you would like the map to be named. Search for the different locations you want to add to the map and click the “+ Add to map” button at the bottom to add it to your map.

Each location added this way should allow you to customize the color and icon that it will be displayed with when someone views the menu. Now we want to go under Share and allow the menu to be publicly found on the web and save that change to ensure your visitors can see the map.

Go to the additional options under the three verticle dots and choose the “Embed on my site” option to get the code needed to place the map on your site. Paste the code into a post or page that you would like the map to appear on, in a HTML block if you are using the default editor, and once it is published you should see your map in your content.

While the Google Maps embed can get the job done for most sites, it does have a pre-set width and height which does not scale will with mobile. This is why we have our second option with Maps Makrer Pro found here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/maps-marker-pro

Once the plugin is installed and activated on your site, you should have a new menu area on the left-hand side called “Maps Marker Pro” that you will want to navigate to. Clck the “Add new map” button and add the locations similar to how you would have with Google’s maps.

By default the current plugin uses Algolia Places to find the different locations but that can be changed should you like. Save the map and if you go back into the “List all maps” area to copy a shortcode to embed the map for those using the classic editor. Otherwise, you can go into a post/page and add the Maps Marker Pro block to select and embed your newly added map.

How to Allow Users to Report Inappropriate Comments in WordPress

A great feature of Facebook groups is it allows users to report inappropriate comments. This brings it to the attention of moderators and administrators to have them remove offensive, rude or hurtful comments from a group. In this video, we’ll show you how to have this same power on your WordPress site where your users will be able to report inappropriate comments.

This video brought to you by WPForms, the most beginner friendly WordPress form plugin, take a look at their site here:

=================================
https://wpforms.com/
=================================

For our discount visit: https://WPForms.com/wpbeginner

For the first method we will be using the Zeno Report Comments plugin that can be found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/zeno-report-comments/

Once you install and activate the plugin you will want to go under Settings, Discussion in your admin area. You will see a checkbox labled Allow comment flagging that you want to check to enable and save this setting.

Additional customization options should now appear such as the flagging threshold which decides how many users need to report the comment for it to be flagged for your attention. There is additonally the option to enable admin notificatons where the admin email address is sent an email when a comment is set for moderation and/or is reported in general.

This will add a report link beneath comments that once clicked will leave a message thanking users for reporting the comments. Now when you go to the comments section in your admin area you should be able to see how many reports a specific comment has.
