How to Properly Move from Medium to WordPress (2022)

Trying to move from Medium to WordPress? There previously was not a working method without going through WordPress.com but we have created a tool to help with this. We’ve created this helpful tool to guide you through the steps involved in moving your content from Medium to WordPress.

WPBeginner’s BlueHost deal:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/bluehost

Start by signing up for hosting on BlueHost if you wanted to follow along with the method in this article but you can choose other hosting should you want. With your hosting, install WordPress with your domain you have selected for your site.

Your hosting provider should give you the login information for your WordPress site in their installer or in a followup email.

With the WordPress site created you will now want to export from Medium. If you have a site without a custom domain then you would want to log into your Medium account, go under settings, and find Download your information where you want to download your zip file. Medium should email you this information.

With the files downloaded you would want to visit the site:

https://mediumtowp.com

Enter your Medium site’s URL in the first field, enter your name, and your email address to export the file. It will bring up the option to upload your Medium site’s zip file after with you will want to click Export my Medium Website. It will modify your export to be able to import it to WordPress.

On your WordPress site, go under Tools, Import and install and activate under the WordPress section as that is what your content was modified for. Click upload file and import, you will have options to choose the author of your posts and import your file attachments if it is able to. Now your site should have your posts imported on to it and you can edit them through WordPress.

If you have a custom domain, on the mediumtowp site then when you add your custom domain to the first box and you should not need to upload an export file. Follow the same method as before to import the WordPress export file. Your dates and tags should be transferred as well.

Free Medium sites don’t have the option to redirect your old posts, you would need to let your users know where to find your new content. For custom domains, you would want to install the Redirection plugin. Under Tools, Redirection you would add links from the old post to the new post in this area.

The code we use for the second method can be found here:
https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-add-image-icons-with-navigation-menus-in-wordpress/

For the first method, we will be showing you we will be using the plugin “Menu Image” found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/menu-image/

With the plugin installed and activated, you can go under Appearance, Menus and edit or create a menu for your site. Under each menu item, you will now have the option to set a menu image and an image on hover. You also have the option to decide where the image appears and the size of the image.

The second option will be manually adding the CSS to add the images to your menu icons.

Start by using the screen options in your menu editor to display the CSS Classes. In the CSS Classes, you will want to add unique identifiers to each of your menu items for the code to choose from. With that set up with your images, you would add the CSS code from our article and change the name to the menu icon you want it to be.

How to Add Age Verification to Your SIte in WordPress

Looking to add age verification on your WordPress site? Some website owners may want to ask their visitors for age verification to view the content of their site due to the content’s nature and any legal requirements. In this video, we will guide you on how to add age verification to your WordPress site easily.

For this tutorial, we will be using the plugin “Age Gate” found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/age-gate/

With the plugin installed and activated you should see the Age Gate item in your admin menu. In that area, you will find the plugin’s settings area where you can configure how you want it to work.

Start by deciding the minimum age and how you would like the users to confirm the age limit. The plugin by default would offer Yes/No buttons, a dropdown box or a form. Save the changes to ensure your preferred settings stay set.

Under the Messaging tab in the plugin, you can decide the headline and sub headline for your message. The Appearance tab also allows you to decide the design of the page to be a simple or as complex as you want it to be.

With that set, you should now see the age verification message when visiting your site.

How to Check If Your WordPress Blog Posts Are Ranking for the Right Keywords

Do you want to check how your WordPress posts are ranking for specific keywords? Most people manually check by typing keywords into Google but that is not an accurate measure of where your articles stand for that keyword. In this video, we will show you how to check if your WordPress blog posts are ranking for the right keywords.

For this tutorial we will be going through three of our recommended tools for checking your site’s keywords, the first of which would be SEMRush found here:

https://www.semrush.com

Enter the domain you want to look up and you will be given tons of information and the keywords are under the organic search tab. You have the option of how to sort the information or export it to a CSV file where you can edit it how you would like in a spreadsheet. This works for any domain so you can even use it for competitor research.

The second method would be to use Google Search Console:

https://search.google.com/search-console/about

If your site is not connected to Google Search Console you would want to take a look at our guide here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-add-your-wordpress-site-to-google-webmaster-tools/

With your site connected you are able to view your site’s performance in search results, impressions, click through rate, position, and more. If you visit the Performance page then click the average position tab, your results will include the average position of your content in terms of where you rank for a specific keyword.

For the third option we are going to recommend Ahrefs found here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/ahrefs/

This is another tool similar to SEMRush with an interface designed to help make the information understandable for new users. Enter your domain and it will pull up a dashboard with information about your site and the Organic keywords under Organic search will be where you can view your keywords. Next to each, there will be the search volume, keyword ranking position, keyword density, and more.

How To Allow Authors To Revise Published Posts in WordPress

We’ve had users with authors on their site asking if they can allow the authors to edit published posts on their WordPress site. These revisions can help improve the content of the article as well as give authors more control over what they publish on your site. In this video, we will guide you on how to allow authors to revise published posts in WordPress.

For this tutorial we will be using the ‘Revision Manager TMC’ plugin found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/revision-manager-tmc/

With the plugin activated, the settings for the plugin can be found under Settings, Revision Manager TMC. In the general settings, you want to select edit_posts under ‘Copy creation capability’ and published_posts in ‘Acceptation capability’. This allows users to create a duplicate of a published post for them to edit and the role you set under ‘Role for notification’ will be notified when the changes are submitted.

Your authors will see the option to create a revision draft. This draft works the same as if the author was editing the post but instead of allowing them to post the changes they make directly the publish button will be a ‘Submit for review’ button. Depending on how you have the plugin set up will determine if an admin or an editor is notified of the draft.

The plugin will send an email to who it was set for with a link to publish the edits by overwriting the original. Once you do the changes will be added and the duplicate post will be removed from your posts area.

►How to Install a WordPress Theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIPQRQLAz90

To begin this process you will need hosting and we recommend using BlueHost and our deal for BlueHost can be found Using this link:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/refer/bluehost/

For just starting out we recommend the basic plan which includes a free domain with your purchase. We also normally recommend removing the additional services to reduce the cost.

With the hosting set up and your WordPress site installed you will want to go back to your Blogger site under Settings to select Back up Content and save that XML file somewhere you can find on your computer.

Go back to your WordPress site and under Tools, Import and you want to click Install Now beneath Blogger to install the importer. The importer will install and activate itself then you will be able to click run importer at the top of the screen or in the same location that the Install Now link was located.

On the screen you are brought to after clicking ‘Run Importer’ you will want to add your file that was downloaded previously to begin the process. Upload the file and you will be able to choose to import the user from your blogger site or assign the content to your current WordPress user. Once the import is complete you will see an ‘All done. Have fun!’ message which means the posts should be imported. Pages and other custom content would need to be manually transferred.

Your permalinks will be different from how they were on Blogger so to resolve that you would want to fix that under Settings, Permalinks. We give the custom code in the text article for you to copy and paste into the custom structure. We also include the code to add to your functions.php for your theme.

With the content imported to easily update the URLs on your site, you would want to install and activate the ‘Blogger to WordPress Redirection’ plugin. Under Tools, Blogger to WordPress Redirection you will want to click the ‘Start Configuration’ button to have the plugin create the redirect you need and then you can click the ‘Get Code’ button below.

The plugin will generate a code snippet for you to redirect your blogger visitors to the new WordPress site. Go to your Blogger dashboard and under ‘Themes’ you will want to edit the HTML and if there is any code in there you want to keep be sure to save it in a new file. Replace the code in the theme with the code from the WordPress plugin and save to activate the redirect. Be sure to check the options under the mobile theme that it is not enabled and instead pointing to the desktop site.

The final step would normally be to redirect your RSS feed under Settings, Other and set the Post Feed Redirect URL to point to the new domain followed by /feed.

For this tutorial we will be using the plugin ‘Twenty20 Image Before-After’ found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/twenty20/

With the plugin installed and activated you can now add or edit any of your WordPress posts or pages and see a button titled ‘Add Twenty20’ above the text editor. Put your text cursor where you want the image to be inserted then click the ‘Add Twenty20’ button to select the two images you want side by side.

The first image you select will be on the left while the second will be on the right. With the images selected click the insert button in the bottom right to insert it into your post/page. It will bring up a new popup for choosing the text above the images, the width of the slider, and other options to customize it.

There is also the option to add a widget under Appearance, Widgets where you can add the Twenty20 widget to your sidebar. The options for the widget should be the same as the ones for an insert into a post or page.

Now when you visit where the comparison is located you will see the image with a slider handle in the middle that you or your users can move it to see the comparison.

For this tutorial, we will be using the ‘CM Tooltip Glossary’ plugin found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/enhanced-tooltipglossary/

Once you activate the plugin you should be redirected to the plugin’s settings page or you can go to the page under CM Tooltip Glossary in your admin area. Under CM Tooltip Glossary, Settings, on the general settings tab, you can select what you would like the page to be titled, click the checkbox beneath and save the settings for the page to be created.

To start adding terms you will go under CM Tooltip Glossary, Add New and you would create a glossary term the same way you would create a post on your site. Add as many terms that you would like and add the glossary page to your menu to be able to directly visit it.

Now when you visit the page the glossary sortable by letter should be visible with links taking you directly to the page for each entry.

How to Put Your WordPress Site in Maintenance Mode

Are you looking to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode? Having your site in maintenance mode allows you to display a notice to your site’s visitors while you update or fix any issues rather than showing a broken site. In this video, we’ll guide you through how to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode.

For the first method we will be using the plugin ‘WP Maintenance Mode’ which can be found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/

With the plugin installed and activated you want to go under Settings, WP Maintenance Mode to set up the plugin’s settings and more importantly, activate the plugin when you want it to display the maintenance page.

In the design tab, you can modify what is displayed on the page for a visitor of your site to the design and message you want. In the modules, you can activate Google Analytics, add social links, set a countdown timer, and offer a subscription for when your site is live.

The second method to do this would be to use the Seedprod plugin found here:

https://www.seedprod.com

This is a paid plugin so when it is activated it will take you to the page for you to input the license key for your site for it to work properly. With the license key added you can edit the settings under Settings, Coming Soon Pro where you can enable the plugin and the type of page you want active.

This plugin allows for greater customizations as well as pre-built templates to help you have a beautiful coming soon page for your site.
