How to Put Your WordPress Site in Maintenance Mode

Are you looking to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode? Having your site in maintenance mode allows you to display a notice to your site’s visitors while you update or fix any issues rather than showing a broken site. In this video, we’ll guide you through how to put your WordPress site in maintenance mode.

For the first method we will be using the plugin ‘WP Maintenance Mode’ which can be found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/

With the plugin installed and activated you want to go under Settings, WP Maintenance Mode to set up the plugin’s settings and more importantly, activate the plugin when you want it to display the maintenance page.

In the design tab, you can modify what is displayed on the page for a visitor of your site to the design and message you want. In the modules, you can activate Google Analytics, add social links, set a countdown timer, and offer a subscription for when your site is live.

The second method to do this would be to use the Seedprod plugin found here:

https://www.seedprod.com

This is a paid plugin so when it is activated it will take you to the page for you to input the license key for your site for it to work properly. With the license key added you can edit the settings under Settings, Coming Soon Pro where you can enable the plugin and the type of page you want active.

This plugin allows for greater customizations as well as pre-built templates to help you have a beautiful coming soon page for your site.

How to Redirect Users to a Random Post in WordPress

Do you want to show random posts on your WordPress site? Displaying the random posts gives your users a chance to view more of your content on your site that they normally may not have. In this video, we’ll show you how you can easily redirect your users to a random post in WordPress.

For this tutorial we will be using the plugin ‘Redirect URL to Post’ found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirect-url-to-post/

With that plugin installed and activated you will see information about the shortcode and other URL parameters, you can use to set up links to random posts on your site. You can use any of the parameters you like or there is also a shortcode that we use in the video. The shortcode is below and will create a button that redirects for you.

[redirect_to_post_button]

The shortcode can be added to the end of your posts or pages so users have the option to use it when they reach the end of your article. Another method would be to use your widgets and add the shortcode into a text widget. That way it will appear on every page your widget displays on and you don’t need to manually add it to every post and page on your site.

There is not a built-in method in WordPress for letting users know there is a reply to a comment on your site. For this tutorial we will be using the Subscribe to Comments Reloaded plugin found here:

New video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIVUvJ9qqn8
Trying to fix 404 errors on your WordPress site? Broken links are annoying for your site visitors and can ruin the experience of your site but are difficult to notice when they happen. We’ve helped thousands of users fix these links and in this video, we will show you how to fix broken links in WordPress with the Broken Link Checker plugin.

For this video we will be using the Broken Link Checker plugin found here:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/broken-link-checker/

Install and activate the plugin then visit the Settings area where you will find a new Link Checker section. The plugin will automatically check your site in the background for any broken links and add them to a link on this page.

Once the search is done you will be able to click the link for a full listing with multiple options on how to handle the link. If you don’t see the link you can also go under your tools and there will be a new Broken Links item.

You can edit the URL, remove the link, tell the plugin it is not broken, dismiss the notice or tell the plugin to check the link again if you are not seeing the 404. If you hover over the post/page title you will also have the option to edit, trash, or view it. When you edit where the link is located you will need to manually find it in your content.

For this tutorial we will be using the Auto Upload Images plugin found here:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/auto-upload-images/

Install and activate the plugin then go to Settings where there will now be an Auto Upload Images section that you will need to go to. We will use the default settings as that will work for most sites so if you save at the bottom of the page it will ensure that you are using the default settings.

This plugin will automatically update any new posts and images to import them but not your old posts without you updating them. To do this we will go to Posts, All Posts and using the screen options in the top right you can increase how many posts are listed at one time.

Click the select all checkbox in the top left of your list of posts to select them all then in the dropdown at the top select Edit then click the Apply button. You only want to click the Update button to have the plugin scan through the list of posts and import any external images onto your site.

WordPress has a default recent posts widget that lists your most recent posts in reverse chronological order which is good for your newer posts but your older posts don’t get as much exposure using that widget. For the first method to have random posts displayed you will want to install the Advanced Random Posts Widget plugin:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-random-posts-widget/

With the plugin activated you should be able to go to Appearance, Widgets to add a new widget labeled ‘Random Posts’ that you can add where you like. The widget allows you to choose how many to display and what types of posts to show. There are other settings available to the plugin that you can modify that we have not covered in this video.

For the second method, we will show you how to manually add code to your theme’s functions.php file and you can find the code in our written article here:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-display-random-posts-in-wordpress/

You will want to copy the entire code from our article and paste it at the bottom of your theme’s functions.php. You can edit this file under Appearance, Editor, and on the right hand side, you would want to select theme functions. Save your changes and now you can add a shortcode where you like on your site to list random posts.

We list the shortcode in our written article as well that you can copy and paste in a post, page, or even in a text widget.
